I was the President of the GGMRC with Mike as my Treasurer and VP back in the late 90's.

Mike was one of the best rail fans that I knew. He rode the train across country to visit with me and my family several years ago. During that trip I took him up to Baltimore to visit the B&O museum. We had a great time and said that we should do that again sometime. Sadly that will never happen. I will miss Mike and his great take on life.

I worked with Mike for a short while at Union Bank-Corporate Deposit Services in early 2004. He was a good person with a great sense of humor. I was saddened to hear that he had passed away. He will definitely be missed.

That's a pretty little building.

I wouldn't worry about the walls being perfectly square. All old buildings, even stone ones, warp a little over time.

Nice! Except for the lightning rod that looks like a floor lamp in the first picture ;-) . Not only is the model well done but the color selection and weathering are also top notch. Hey! I used to shop at the Roundhouse, I would always see Gary Coleman there. Also, I fully agree with Rangachari lol! You know when you have matured as a model railroader when you plan with an understanding of how long it take to build this stuff! Again, excellent work sir!

Nice model! I have always felt that buying stuff is the easy part of this hobby. Doing something with the things you buy - that's the hard part.

Nice review - I agree with you on most points. I can certainly relate to your experience of downloading an issue and having never got time to read it! ...which is part of the problem for me - the virtual magazine will always be tied to a device and won't be as convenient. I think the publication is great, but you'll never see me give up MR (despite it's ebbs and flows) as it is always available for review.

In truth, I don't think they're the same thing. MRHM and MR are both model railroad themed publications, but only one is a magazine... In my mind it's an apples and oranges situation.

@Dandy - Curious about those readership stats? You wouldn't happen to have a source would you? I would question if the decline in readership is related to the magazine, or the hobby in general?

Thanks again for a great article.

Spot on! I was surprised to hear that readership of Model Railroader has declined by about 20% over the years. And now this comes along and its free! And the PDF features make it so fun. I don't know how print magazines can compete now.

Great description of a fast method for landscape! I wish I had taken that path on my N-scale railroad. I had a 5x9 foot rectangular layout with a yard off to the side ... operated it for almost 5 years ... had several finished areas but always had plywood and particle board showing somewhere. If I had painted and textured all of the exposed wood as you recommend, my whole layout would have looked much better ... and almost instantly! Now I am involved in a backyard railway, G-scale ... just an out and back with a loop at each end: The Paris-To-Peking Railway in Ventura, CA ... "The Poolside Route" ... "From P to Shining P", as we joke about it. Now I use real wood, real plants, and real mud to complete the scenes ... but the kids and the darned dog keep digging things up and causing "natural disasters" ... It's a challenge! My brother, John, posts our progress on his site, almost daily. Thank you for the awesome advice! -- Eric Reinhart

I'm watching a video series of "Dream Plan Build" that my Pop has. He has had Lionel trains, all my life at least! He will be 92 years old in September. He has a 3 tier railroad system set up in my sisters basement that is awesome. He also has repaired many trains that people have brought to him.
